RABT (UNISEX TSHIRT)

The Story

Rabt means connection — a relationship between things that may appear separate, yet belong together.

This article explores that connection between tradition and modernity: how cultural practices can continue to live in the present without losing the character that made them meaningful in the first place.

Rather than replacing the traditional with the contemporary, Rabt looks for a conversation between the two — allowing familiar motifs, handmade techniques, and cultural references to exist within a modern silhouette.

But the idea of Rabt goes further.

The artwork itself is built around connection. Individual block-printed motifs are brought together through hand stitching, creating visible lines between separate elements. What begins as a collection of individual marks gradually becomes one connected composition.

Tradition finds its place in the present.
Separate impressions find their connection.
And the garment becomes the Rabt between them.

The Front

The article begins with the fabric itself.

The entire surface is first block printed with a subtle, self-coloured pattern, creating a tonal texture that becomes the foundation for the artwork without overpowering it.

Over this base, selected traditional-inspired motifs are block printed across the front. The MALANG lettering — formed through the Urdu characters میم، لام، نون — is also rendered through block printing, integrating the identity of the brand into the handmade visual language.

The sleeve border continues the block-printed motif, while one sleeve carries a block-printed heart, adding a more personal and expressive element to the composition.

The defining detail comes next.

The individual motifs are connected through hand-stitched lines, physically linking one printed element to another. The stitching travels across the garment and into the sleeves, turning separate motifs into one continuous artwork.

The handwork is therefore not simply decorative.

It is the Rabt.

The Back

The back continues the same visual language, carrying additional block-printed motifs across the fabric.

Just like the front, these elements are connected through hand stitching, allowing the artwork to move naturally across the garment rather than remaining confined to a single graphic.

The stitching creates an organic network between the motifs — each one retaining its individuality while becoming part of something larger.

Together, the front, back, and sleeves form one continuous composition: different marks, connected by hand.

The Craft

Rabt is built in stages.

First, the fabric is given its tonal block-printed base.

Then individual motifs are carefully block printed onto the garment.

Finally, each selected motif is connected through hand stitching, creating the lines that visually and conceptually bind the artwork together.

The result is an article where the process itself becomes part of the meaning — block printing creates the individual impressions, while hand stitching creates their relationship.

• Wash separately or with similar colours.
• Avoid machine washing to protect the block-printed artwork and hand stitching.
• Turn the garment inside out before washing.
• Avoid harsh detergents and excessive rubbing over printed or stitched areas.
• Do not expose directly to harsh sunlight for extended periods.
• Dry in shade.
• Handle the hand-stitched areas gently.

Craft & Finish

Rabt is created through a combination of hand block printing and hand stitching, with each stage contributing to the final artwork.

Because the motifs are individually block printed and the connections are hand stitched, slight variations in placement, print density, stitching, and finish are expected.

These variations are an inherent part of the handmade process — each garment carries the subtle evidence of the hands that made it.
